Arcana Coaching director Clive Gross spent over 15 years working in the music and entertainment industry before moving to Sussex in 2001 to start a catering and arts business. He joined the national BizFizz Business Coaching programme in 2006. Created jointly by the New Economics Foundation and Civic Trust to bring coaching methodology to business support in regeneration areas, he has been the only South East based coach on the programme.
Starting his career in music retail, he had his own store in the famous Kensington High Street Great Gear Market, before going on to merchandise for and then manage independent and alternative bands. Clive has worked in many diverse roles in the music industry for independent labels, as well as having his own alternative label, production and distribution business. Clive went on to work for a major film distribution company, responsible for brands including MTV Home Entertainment. He has also worked as a Key Account Manager in a specialist film industry design agency, managing international packaging and promotional material for films.
Since 2002 he has been a Visiting Lecturer at Sussex Downs College working with Degree Foundation Music Production students on entrepreneurial practice in the music industry. He has also been drummer and frontman in his own bands, and run alternative club nights as promoter and DJ. He continues to be a keen landscape and architectural photographer and has had a number of his own small exhibitions. He understands both the creative process and the business side of the industry, and has experienced the stresses and strains both can bring.
As a coach, Clive has worked with and supported a wide variety of people with a huge range of business ideas from their Eureka moment through to and beyond start-up. These have included creative freelancers and performers, retail and catering businesses, social enterprises and community groups. Over the years, Clive has been involved with many community campaigns, from fighting local hospital closures to being Press Officer for the Wimbledon FC Supporters Club.
Arcana Coaching is the integration of all his diverse experience and knowledge to deliver coaching, mentoring and facilitation for life, business, performance and creativity.
Arcana comes from the word arcane, which means mysterious, secret or understood by few and may often be used in reference to old or ancient knowledge. We chose the name as it signifies our approach of integrating modern coaching methods with the much older roots and understanding from which many of them come or can be traced back to.
Arcana Coaching is dedicated to helping individuals, groups, businesses, organizations and communities develop simple, powerful strategies for dealing with the challenges of modern life, wherever and whenever they occur, using all of this new and old knowledge. Amazing things can be achieved with the right blend of intention, attention and action. Arcana Coaching is about demystifying and debunking much of the superstition that surrounds some of this ancient wisdom and helping to make it accessible to anyone who is interested in self-development in a jargon-free way.

Arcana is also the name given to the characters and houses of the Tarot, which may have appeared as early as 1392. While its origins are mysterious, it is said the truths contained in the Tarot are universal and belong to no one race, creed, belief system or culture. For example, the Myers Briggs psychometric test beloved by so many corporate HR departments is based on Jungʼs human archetypes, which he based in turn on an understanding of the Trump – or Major Arcana - cards of the Tarot!
Our favourite character among the Major Arcana is The Fool – who is often compared to the Jester or Joker character in modern playing cards, but is often misunderstood. In many modern interpretations, The Fool is the protagonist of a story – or setting out on a quest for self-development - and the other characters in the Major Arcana represent the path he takes through the great mysteries of life and the main human archetypes he might meet. This path is known as The Fool´s Journey, or maybe more appropriately, Life’s Journey?
The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the innate cleverness or natural wisdom within us, and the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world we often lose as we grow up. His number in the Tarot deck is 0, as he can become anything he wants when he reaches his destination. Another nice interpretation of the card is that of taking action where circumstances are unknown, confronting one's fears, or taking risks – as we must all do sometimes in life.
